Process

For my first project in my position at HUB International, I was tasked with redesigning and developing a digital catalog using Microsoft PowerPoint. The purpose of the catalog was to market the Sales Force Development team and the various programs, workshops, and complex training initiatives on offer. My version of the catalog had fifty-six pages and eight sections. The catalog was available to HUB's 17,000+ employees through the company intranet and was distributed to a smaller subset of employees through email.

First, I took stock of the current version of the catalog and made note of several things including how the look and structure could be improved, the necessary page layout types, and what information needed checking and/or updating. For example, I had the idea to add two new sections - Meet the Team and Testimonials - so that readers could learn about each individual team member's background and the positive experiences of others who have previously worked with the Sales Force Development team.

Another small but significant change I made was putting the section name, instead of the page title, in the footer, as well as adding a small rectangle with text saying "Program" or "Workshop" on all of the program and workshop pages. Those two sections combined take up thirty-one of the fifty-six pages. I wanted readers to be able to quickly and easily note which section of the catalog they are in on any given page.

Then, I designed templates for each of the page layout types, using brand colors and fonts, and shared the prototype with my supervisor and colleague for review.

Once I incorporated their revisions, I started building out the catalog which involved pasting and formatting text, sourcing and cropping icons and images and adding and checking hyperlinks.

After a few more rounds of review and revision with my supervisor and colleague, I sent the complete first draft for review by the leader of the Sales Force Development team.

Once the final revisions were complete, the finalized version of the digital catalog was uploaded to the company intranet and distributed through email.

Takeaways

This was the most graphic design-intensive project I have ever worked on. I enjoyed finding ways to visually improve the catalog, giving it a more modern and professional look, as well as finding ways to improve the content, functionality, and readability.

On a more recent project in my position at HUB International, I learned how to use and leverage the Slide Master. The catalog content is updated each year and this year I plan to focus on transferring my template into the Slide Master, to make the yearly updates easier and faster.
